Information for Parents on Health Promoting Schools

Health Promoting School

The European Network of Health Promoting Schools (ENHPS) is a joint initiative between the WHO Regional Office for Europe, the Commission of European Communities and the Council of Europe. The ENHPS was created in 1992 and has almost 40 participating countries. Scotland became a member in 1993.

What is a Healthy School?

"A health promoting school is one in which all members of the school community work together to provide pupils with integrated and positive experiences and structures, which promote and protect their health. This includes both the formal and the informal curriculum in health, the creation of a safe and healthy school environment, the provision of appropriate health services and the involvement of the family and the wider community in efforts to promote health." (WHO 1995)
