Pentland Primary Eco-Schools Group
The eco-committee is a group of approximately 14 children (2 from each class), 4 parents and a member of staff. We meet around twice a term to work towards the eco-schools green flag.
The idea is to teach the children about how to care for their environment, to try not to waste energy & resources & to re-use as much as we can.
Pentland already has the bronze award & we are very close to silver then we go for the green flag which is the final award.
You can find more information about eco schools on their website www.ecoschoolsscotland.org
Part of gaining the bronze award involved us forming a code which is displayed in the area at the bottom of the stairs between the P2 P1 classrooms.
1. Recycling - its the way forward. Always recycle what you can.
2. Keep the playground tidy & clean.
3. Save energy - turn off computers, lights, all electrical things.
4. Reduce wastage, close doors and turn radiators off or down.
5. If it's not far don't take the car.
6. Don't falter, turn off the water.
We have also set up several eco initiatives:-
-
P6's collect waste paper from the classrooms for recycling
-
The children in the eco-committee collect organic waste to put in the composter
-
We have just purchased a wormery so are looking forward to seeing how well they recycle kitchen waste.
-
We have installed a water butt in the garden area to re-cycle water.
-
We also planted a willow "fedge" to protect part of the garden area. (we hope to plant a tunnel & wigwam in spring next year)
The whole school were involved in collecting used bottles & we finally collected enough to build the greenhouse which looks fantastic & has tomatoes growing in it.
